The interesting thing about Multitouch technology is how quickly it has escalated to the status of being mainstream. While Multitouch as an overall technology is still far too expensive to be considered a mainstream product, at the same time the advancements that companies like Microsoft have made in Multitouch technology have been extremely impressive when the short time frame of their work is taken into account.
When Multitouch was demoed in 2006 by Jeff Han, everyone was extremely impressed with the idea of touch screen technology in its truest form and indeed at that point it felt as if the high tech interface from the movie Minority Report had been recreated in real life. At that time however, Multitouch was still a curiosity. It was something to be in awe of, rather than something that a normal person could believe that they would be able to possess.
However, that was before companies like Apple and Microsoft got their hands on the Multitouch technology and started incorporating it into their products. Now, with iPhones and Surface Computers as the witness, Multitouch has taken the world by storm and it appears to only be getting stronger with the steady passage of time.
John Underkoffler was the advisor on science and technology for the movie Minority Report when the movie was released in 2002. Apparently, Underkoffler was more clairvoyant than many at the time thought, as Multitouch technology has been used in advertising, coverage of political events and with the advent of the Microsoft Surface computer it is now also readily available for public consumption and use.
Truly, the future has arrived.
